We believe that orchestras are for everyone.
Orchestras Live recruits new trustees to its Board on a regular basis – on average one or two trustees complete their set term of service each year. We welcome expressions of interest from potential trustees at any time, whether or not there is currently a vacancy on the Board.
With over 50 years’ experience, we make world-class orchestral music relevant to people’s lives through dynamic partnerships and innovative projects, particularly in culturally under-served areas of England. As a national music charity, we aim to ensure that people from all backgrounds have the opportunity to engage as participants and audiences with professional British orchestras, experiencing the thrill of high quality live performance.
We seek to recruit trustees to be active and involved members of a dynamic and ambitious team and to take forward the strategic development of the charity. We are looking for trustees from across England with an enthusiasm for orchestral music and belief in its potential to transform lives. At present we would particularly welcome applications from people with expertise in any or a combination of the following areas:
- Diversity – policy or programme delivery relating to BAME, gender, disability, class
- Health & Wellbeing – organisations and commissioning/development of national policy
- Income generation models – social investment, public sector commissioning
Orchestras Live has identified diversity as a key priority within its Business Plan. We are committed to improving the diversity of the orchestral sector on and off the platform and aim to reflect this ambition in the make up of our Board. Trustees meet four or five times a year; meetings usually take place in London at at the end of a weekday afternoon, with at least one a year outside London and an annual Awayday. We maximise the use of technology to enable trustees to join by phone or online where necessary. The role is voluntary and unpaid but travel and other appropriate expenses are reimbursed.
Role of Trustees
The Trustees have ultimate accountability for directing the affairs of Orchestras Live, and ensuring that it is solvent, well-run, and delivering the charitable outcomes for which it has been set up. Trustees must act with integrity and avoid any personal conflicts of interests and are expected to be advocates for Orchestras Live whenever the opportunity arises.
All Trustees need to meet the following essential criteria:
- Commitment to and support of Orchestras Live’s purpose and vision;
- Achievement in the private, public or voluntary sectors;
- The ability to think strategically at board level and exercise sound judgement;
- An ability to represent their own area of expertise in the full range of board discussions;
- A clear understanding of the principles of charitable and corporate governance.

Our partnerships with our national network of promoters, with the country’s leading orchestras, with music education hubs and numerous other stakeholders give us a unique ability to ensure that the widest possible audiences, particularly those who are geographically and socially isolated, can be inspired by the excellence of professional British orchestras. We operate away from London and large metropolitan centres, focusing our work in under-served parts of the country where investment in and engagement with the arts is relatively low and where, without our work, professional British orchestral activity would not take place.
