Surf and Turf - a celebration of words and music in Suffolk
Orchestras Live has formed a consortium of four district authorities for Surf and Turf - a series of collaborations with the London Sinfonietta exploring words and music in the context of coastal and inland parts of Suffolk.
This summer, composer Fraser Trainer and poet Dean Parkin will lead intergenerational projects in Shotley and Felixstowe, with subsequent projects in Stowmarket and Newmarket in the pipeline for summer 2010. Meanwhile, details of the events for 2009 are as follows:
Thu 4 June 2009
5–6pm and 7–8pm
The Shipwreck Pub, Shotley Marina
London Sinfonietta musicians will perform alongside young people from Shotley Community Primary School and volunteers from the historic site of the HMS Ganges. These groups will work together to create a new piece to be showcased in these evening concerts alongside existing contemporary repertoire performed by the London Sinfonietta.
Sat 4 Jul 2009
4.30–5.30pm
Landguard Fort, Felixstowe
Students from Deben and Orwell High Schools in Felixstowe, with young people from Colneis Primary School and Top Time adult writers group continue this project with a celebration of Felixstowe's new coastal walk. With London Sinfonietta musicians, and using written and spoken word as a starting point, they will work with Fraser Trainer and Dean Parkin to create new work which will be performed in the spectacular setting of Landguard Fort.
Further information (including a blog) plus details of the continuing project in June and July 2010 will be posted on the Surf and Turf website.
