In 2017, Orchestras Live embarked on a ground-breaking project: Sound Around. This large-scale audience-focused, youth-led, inclusive learning and participation programme is influencing the concept of orchestral performances and audiences long term. At the project’s heart, Young Producers were immersed in a creative team to engage with, curate and present live orchestral performances with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Sound Around aimed to generate inspirational opportunities for children and young people across England, particularly those with additional needs, and those with little or no access to live orchestral concert experiences.
Over two years, Sound Around reached:
12,431 students from 300+ Carlisle, Doncaster, Lowestoft, Northampton, Reading and Sunderland primary, secondary & special schools
113 Young Producers aged 11-18 from mainstream and SEN/D settings
1,382 families and young people with additional needs at Relaxed performances
2,200+ SEN/D young people aged 4-18 and staff through RPO Octet tour.
