Sound Around – on stage and behind the scenes
Sound Around, a large-scale inclusive touring programme promoted and produced by Orchestras Live aimed at engaging young people with orchestral music, sees its first year brought to a culmination over the coming weeks with performances for schools in Doncaster, Sunderland and Northampton, as well as relaxed family concerts, all shaped and delivered by inclusive groups of young producers in each area.
Ahead of these performances, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra violinist Sali-Wyn Ryan and Doncaster Young Producer Summer share their experiences of Sound Around so far…
It’s an incredibly rewarding experience to be involved with the Sound Around project this year. As part of the RPO Resound team, we have been travelling to Northampton, Sunderland and Doncaster and working with a huge array of young people over the last few months. There have been many creative challenges so far – ranging from selecting various pieces of music to perform to collaborating with technical teams and negotiating bringing a car onto a staging area! We’ve encouraged the groups to engage with a variety classical, film and contemporary music; the outcome being artistic choices based on reactions, likes and dislikes. The participants, I hope, will benefit hugely from this experience, which promises to be truly memorable. We have attempted to match various roles with people, dependent on their specific level of interest, skill sets or ambitions and have created teams suited to run each specific event. Whether as a presenter, technician, event manager or marketing expert; we have aimed to provide the young people with as high a level of expertise as possible during this project and I can’t wait to see and perform in the end result.

My name is Summer and I’m 11 years old. I’m one of the Young Producers in Doncaster and I’m mainly working in the Marketing and Comms Team producing the concert programme and looking after our VIP guests. I’ve never seen an orchestra live before so it’s been really cool to meet some of the musicians from the RPO and to help organise these concerts. I’m looking forward to seeing if all our planning and work has paid off and to seeing what the audiences think. I’ve learned how to work as a team and how much work goes into producing a concert.
