Sound Around relaxed family concerts – Doncaster, Sunderland, Northampton
Sound Around, a large-scale inclusive touring programme promoted and produced by Orchestras Live aimed at engaging young people with orchestral music, sees its first year brought to a culmination over the coming weeks with performances for schools in Doncaster, Sunderland and Northampton, as well as relaxed family concerts, all shaped and delivered by inclusive groups of young producers in each area.
Come and meet the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and hear amazing music in one of our relaxed concerts that the whole family can enjoy. The 25-piece orchestra will perform a variety of music including classical masterpieces and themes from blockbuster films.
During the relaxed concert you can move about, dance, sing or just listen, and if it all gets too much there will always be somewhere to chill out. At the end of the concert you will also be able to meet the musicians and even have a go at playing some instruments.

The project got well underway in January as 8 musicians from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) visited special schools in Sunderland, Northampton and Doncaster to deliver fun, interactive performances. The RPO team visited 12 schools for a morning or afternoon session, and delivered a series of 45-minute concerts presented by world-renowned music leader, Tim Steiner.
Performances featured a range of classical favourites and pieces from television and film, interspersed with musician introductions, instrument demonstrations and interactive activities including learning a song specially created for Sound Around. Visits also saw football conducting, ten pin bowling, and appearances from a special musical guest…
BBC Look North ran a feature on the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s visit to Sunningdale School in Sunderland as part of the tour. You can watch the feature online here.
After attending the first RPO octet performance, Sunderland City Council Deputy Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, Councillor Lynda Scanlan said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for children and young people in our city, not only to develop their musical talent but also to display their organisational skills working alongside the professionals to stage concerts at Sunderland’s Empire Theatre. We want to provide every pupil in every school in our city with the chance to achieve their full potential, and this music project will help play a great role in this on-going process.”
Manager of the Sunderland Music Hub, Rebecca Pedlow added: “Sound Around supports many curriculum targets in class and will also be a rare opportunity for children to experience a huge London orchestra live at our local venue.”
In 2017/18, Sound Around will be touring to Carlisle, Lowestoft and Reading.
