Last month we worked with our partners in the north of England to bring inspirational live orchestral experiences to young people and communities in their local areas. Read on to find out more and see photos from the events.
The Moon Hares in Durham
Musicians from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment worked with young musicians from Wolsingham School, local primary schools and community choirs in County Durham to create a collaborative community opera – The Moon Hares – with a story by Hazel Gould and music by James Redwood. Over 150 participants premiered the new opera on stage at the Empire Theatre, Consett, alongside the professional musicians of OAE to an audience who were mostly seeing an opera for the first time. This project was co-produced with Durham Music Service and supported by the Foyle Foundation.

Hallé Magic in Catterick
Developed through our new partnership with NYMAZ as part of their Music for Two regular music sessions, we brought Hallé musicians and their ‘Magic Box’ to very young children and their families in Catterick Garrison, home of the British Army in the north. Led by Jo Brockbank, Hallé Magic encouraged children to explore the contents of the Magic Box, revealing some familiar tunes and experience the instruments and musicians up close, responding in their own way to the music being performed. We are working with NYMAZ to bring more orchestral events for families to North Yorkshire over the next two years.
