Featured Partner: Bramley Vale Primary and Nursery School
NewsNews Story
In this blog series, we introduce you to one of our fantastic partner organisations.
These quick-fire interviews give an insight into what it's really like to work with us and introduce you to the broad range of organisations we collaborate with.
In this feature, we speak with Rob Rumsby. Rob is the headteacher at Bramley Vale Primary and Nursery School.
Which organisation do you work for and what does your role involve?
I work for Bramley Vale Primary and Nursery School. We are a small school and my role is Headteacher – it's a privilege.
What do you most enjoy about your role?
I really appreciate the versatility of my role – no two days ever look the same, because of the children. More than anything else, I enjoy seeing the children grow in their confidence and ability, especially in art, sports, drama, music and dance.
How did you hear about Orchestras Live and when did you begin working with us?
We first started working together on a project with Music in the Round in early 2022.
Duncan Chapman, the Music Leader for the project, came to our school and delivered co-composition workshops where pupils at the school worked with musicians to compose pieces that were later performed at the Doe Lea Centre. The pupils came up with creative responses to RIBA East Midlands award-winning sculpture ‘The Dancing Flowers of Doe Lea’, which was designed by Donkin Liu with children and local people in 2019, and sits at the entrance to the village.
Since our first partnership four years ago, we’ve never looked back – for the pupils, being able to work alongside musicians who engage and inspire really changed their view of music.
What’s the most memorable thing about our partnership project?
The confidence and growth we have seen in children working with visiting musicians. Plus, the ease with which the children communicate and respond in sessions. It hasn't been about just the performance, but about true collaboration, with children's input clearly shaping the outcomes.
Orchestras Live's commitment to perform in local community centres has also been a personal highlight. Seeing families sharing the pleasure of live music in local venues has been moving, and I consider this one of the highlights of my time as Headteacher at Bramley Vale Primary and Nursery School.

Pupils take part in a lively music session, learning alongside visiting musicians.
What excites you most about the future of our partnership?
I start every school year in September wondering what new and exciting offer might come our way. No year with Orchestras Live has been the same, and this is what keeps our connection fresh and fun - we love a challenge!
Describe working with us in three words.
Pitch perfect partnership!
